For Barat Ali Batoor, a camera has always been his voice, his act of resistance and a passport to the world. As the first Hazara photojournalist, he covered news and humanitarian issues in war-torn Afghanistan post 9/11. But when he exposes human rights abuses, everything he has worked for is jeopardised. The images spark international uproar and death threats force him to flee.
My Refugee Journey is an unflinching story of survival told through Batoor’s own gripping photos and videos. He crosses borders and oceans, survives a shipwreck, escapes an Indonesian detention centre, all whilst turning the camera on himself and capturing a rare, first-person perspective of life chasing asylum, and the high price of telling the truth.
Today Batoor is safely settled in Melbourne Australia. Yet even here the shadows of racism are rising, as the national conversation increasingly targets immigrants like himself.
